Scope of the Call

    is open for projects which promote good data practices by creating executable applications  Desirable projects promote good data practices by creating executable applications that are sustainable and impactful.

    • Projects must align with institutional data and digitalization strategies and not be one-off solutions.

    • Outputs should be code-based applications, such as software prototypes, data models, or ontologies.

    • Applications must be integrable into existing or future data environments or workflows.

    • They should be transferable and scalable, serving wider scientific or institutional communities.

    • Projects should deliver useful services to researchers by enhancing data processes or enabling new approaches.

    • Outputs must support research activities rather than teaching or administrative tasks alone.

    • Projects should identify potential user groups, ideally across institutions or disciplinary communities.

    • Proposals must outline strategies for sustainability, impact, and dissemination, favoring open science and FAIR principles.

    • Activities like data production, training, or text-based strategy papers are not considered eligible outputs.

    Who can apply?
    • Core team with up to three key collaborators with a coordinating PI assuming also managerial tasks 
    • The coordinating PI must be based at a university or non-university research institution in Vienna
    • Co-PIs may be based outside of Vienna (funding limited to 20% of the overall budget)
    Funding:
    • Project duration: 12-24 months
    • Budget for individual projects:  € 50,000 - 100,000
    • Overall call volume: 800.000 €
    • Personnel and non-personnel costs can be claimed; max. 30% non-personnel costs
    • No inkind contributions are required; no overhead costs will be paid
    Timeline:
    • Proposal deadline: September/October, 2025, 2pm CET 
    • Expected funding decision: December 2025
    • Project start: 1.5.2026
    Evaluation and decision process:
    • Application via WWTF Funding Portal
    • Pre-selection by institutions
    • One-stage call process
    • Selection by a jury composed of international and national experts
