# General Eligibility

<p class="callout info"><span lang="EN-GB">The general eligibility of applicants is specified in the </span><span lang="DE">[<span lang="EN-GB">WWTF Funding Guideline</span>](https://wwtf.at/upload/wwtf_forderrichtlinie_08112021_final(1).pdf) *(in German only):*</span></p>

- <span lang="EN-GB">Research institutions (universities and public/private non-university research institutions) as legal entities are eligible to apply. As a rule, they must be located in Vienna.</span>
- <span lang="EN-GB">Their main activity must be the development of scientific knowledge within the framework of a long-term, independent and predominantly non-economic activity, the focus of which is on gaining knowledge. </span>
- <div>Funding contracts are concluded with the respective institution; for universities UG 2002, § 27 is applied. The respective project must be led by scientists who work at research institutions eligible to apply or who are employed there in the course of the project.</div>
- <div>Predominantly commercially active companies cannot receive funding from the WWTF.</div>
- <div>Civil society organizations can receive funding to a certain extent as partners, provided this is specified in the respective call documents.</div>
